The three main applications of butyl rubber

Butyl rubber (IIR) is a synthetic rubber produced by the cationic polymerization of isobutylene and isoprene under the action of a Friedel-Craft catalyst. It has excellent air tightness and good heat resistance, aging resistance, ozone resistance, solvent resistance, electrical insulation, shock absorption and low water absorption, it is widely used in inner tube, vulcanized capsule, air-tight layer, sidewall, wire and cable, waterproof building materials, shock-absorbing materials, medicinal bottle stopper, food (chewing gum base material), rubber dam, anti-virus appliance, adhesive, inner tube odd door core, anti-corrosion products, dock ship fender, bridge support pad and heat-resistant transport belt.
Three major applications of butyl rubber
1. Tires
The largest application of butyl rubber is in the manufacture of tire inner liners and tire inner tubes. Halogenated butyl rubber used in the tire industry as an inner liner for automobiles, trucks, public vehicles and aircraft tires, and its use accounts for 84.6 per cent of the total consumption of butyl rubber in China.
Radial tire inner liner is generally composed of halogenated butyl rubber. Each truck tire uses about 1.2kg of halogenated butyl rubber, 0.35kg of light truck tire and 0.3kg of car tire. At the same time, all-steel radial truck tires are equipped with butyl inner tubes according to 50%, and oblique truck tires are equipped with butyl inner tubes according to 20%. On average, each inner tube needs about 2.3kg of ordinary butyl rubber.
2. Medicinal rubber stopper
Butylation of medical bottle stopper is the second largest demand market of butyl rubber in China. In order to ensure the safety of drug use, the national competent department of medicine issued the national medicine administration note [2000] No. 462, stipulating that after the end of 2004, all domestic pharmaceutical rubber plugs (including powder injection, infusion and oral liquid and other dosage forms of rubber plugs) will stop using ordinary natural rubber bottle plugs. At present, butyl rubber used in China's pharmaceutical rubber plug accounts for 10.5 of the total consumption. The following describes several major medicinal rubber plugs.
3. Other
The remaining 4.9 percent of butyl rubber is mainly consumed in chewing gum base, waterproofing membrane, adhesive, rubber dam, etc. The use of this material is described below.
Chewing gum base is a non-nutritious, non-digestible, and water-insoluble, easily chewable solid. It is the most basic chewing substance in chewing gum and bubble gum. Some chewing gum products contain 20%-30% butyl rubber gum base.
Butyl waterproof tape is a kind of lifelong non-curing self-adhesive waterproof sealing tape made of butyl rubber as the main raw material and other additives through advanced processing technology. It has strong adhesive force on the surface of various materials, and has excellent weather resistance, aging resistance and water resistance, and plays a role in sealing, shock absorption and protection on the surface of the adherend. The product is completely solvent-free, so it does not shrink and does not emit toxic gases. Because it is not cured for life, it is an extremely advanced waterproof sealing material.
The production method of butyl rubber adhesive is to first plasticize butyl rubber, then mix with other solid additives, slice, dissolve in solvent gasoline, add 91% isopropanol, dissolve and stir evenly. Generally used as solvent pressure sensitive adhesive and sealant.
Rubber dam, also known as rubber sluice, is a bag-type dam with high-strength synthetic fiber fabric as the stress skeleton, butyl rubber coated inside and outside as the protective layer, processed into adhesive tape, and then anchored to the bottom into a closed dam bag, which is inflated by filling and discharging pipes with water (gas). The crest of the dam can overflow, and the height of the dam can be adjusted according to the needs, and the upstream water level can be controlled to play the role of irrigation, power generation, shipping, flood control, tide and so on.
